Harriet Lummis Smith (???? - 1947)

Harriet Lummis Smith

Born in Auburndale, Massachussets, Harriet Lummis Smith was a WLCB club member from 1909 until at least 1919. Smith was the daughter of Jennie Brewster Lummis and Henry Lummis Smith, who had been the head of the Greek department at Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin, where Lummis received her BA degree in 1889. She went on to teach high school and worked as an editor before eventually becoming a successful novelist and short story writer. She joined the WLCB in December 1907 and served in various leadership positions before being elected president of the club in the 1914-1915 season. She was a prolific writer of short stories and became known for authoring installments in the Pollyanna and Friendly Terrace/Peggy Raymond series of novels for girls. She was living in Philadelphia when she passed away on May 9, 1947 but is buried in Baltimore.
