Alice Emma Sauerwein Lord (Mrs. Charles W.) (1848-1930)

Alice Emma Sauerwein Lord

Alice Emma Sauerwein was one of the WLCB’s most active members. She frequently presented her works and the works of others to the Club, and she was decisive and opinionated when organizational matters came to the floor. Born in 1848 to a prominent Baltimore family involved in commerce and local organizations, she married Charles W. Lord in her thirties and became his second wife. One of her editors noted that the bulk of her writings were published following her marriage, underscoring the seriousness with which she undertook her literary pursuits and, perhaps, implying her husband’s support of her activities. Lord was also involved in the Woman’s Club of Roland Park and The Lend-a-Hand Club of Mount Washington.

A poet, novelist, and playwright, Lord’s published works include a collection of poetry, A Symphony in Dreamland (1899), the historical novel The Days of Lamb and Coleridge (1893), which was positively reviewed in the Baltimore Sun, and a play, A Vision’s Quest (1899). She dedicated A Symphony in Dreamland to her husband, whose “tender counsels,” she wrote, “bade me hope and work.”
